Presented by the Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR), Government of India, 2010

Ram V. Sutar (1925) is one of the most esteemed contemporary Indian sculptors. Among other things, he designed the Statue of Unity in Gujarat, which is the tallest bronze monument in the world with a height of 182 metres. Sutar gained international recognition with his series of portrait sculptures of Mahatma Gandhi (1869–1948), Indian politician, lawyer and activist, one of the creators of modern India and an influential advocate of satyagraha, a form of non-violent resistance as a means to achieve revolution. The Government of the Republic of India donated Sutar’s portraits of Gandhi to many countries across the world, including Slovenia in 2010, when the statue was placed in Slovenj Gradec, a Peace Messenger City.
