The Sarajevo-born artist Alija Hafizović – Haf left the besieged city of Sarajevo in 1993 and went to Slovenia, where he created a variety of exhibition projects dedicated to Sarajevo. The paintings from the series “Scars” were made as part of the fourth of those projects. In the series, Hafizović focused on the invisible wounds left by the devastation of war in the intimate life of an individual.

»The pictorial surface represents Haf’s intimate space with an ordered weave of peculiar metaphors: brush strokes, shapes which divide the almost monochromatic background into several fields, and subtle, minute sighs – these are the artist’s psychical scars which, slowly and steadily, are being eased and healed.« (Nives Marvin)
