The starting point of Markota’s work is the Slovene saying “From this Flour There Will be no Bread”, that carries many connotations and questions about what kind of bread (meaning livelihood, subsistence in Slovenian) we have every day, what kind of bread awaits us elsewhere, what kind of bread is available to the people coming here … Under the fake idea of abundance in so-called western societies and the promise of better bread here lurks a lot of garbage and dirt that becomes a part of our lives.
The artist staged a performance in front of the Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art Koroška. He sifted flour in the form of a template “Iz te moke ne bo kruha” (“From this Flour There Will be no Bread”) on the floor. After a few hours, when the passers-by stepped on the flour, he picked it up and baked bread out of it at home.
